Q4. On average, approximately how many students will be enrolled as transfer students in top 10 US universities every year? I guess it won’t be that big of a number? You are correct, in that the number of students enrolled as transfer students in the top 10 universities each year is very small. It is a very low number. I can’t necessarily give you an exact number because it fluctuates from year to year and university to university, but we do know that they reserve very few spots for transfer students each year, as I just mentioned about Stanford and even fewer spots for students transferring internationally.

Students are held to be exact same standards as incoming freshman, and now your college course work comes into play as well. So you really need to not only stand out in your high school, but now you also need to stand out on your college and have done really well academically.

申請(qǐng)轉(zhuǎn)學(xué)的學(xué)生，其被錄取的標(biāo)準(zhǔn)和申請(qǐng)本科新生入學(xué)的標(biāo)準(zhǔn)是一致的。不過(guò)轉(zhuǎn)學(xué)就當(dāng)然還要在這個(gè)基礎(chǔ)之上看看你的大學(xué)在校表現(xiàn)如何。所以你不僅要在高中階段表現(xiàn)出眾，還要在你現(xiàn)在所在的學(xué)校表現(xiàn)出眾。

Again, standing out from your peers academically, and outside the classroom is really how you can get a foot in the door as a transfer student. Make sure to do things that are aligned with your academic areas of interest outside the classroom that is different and unique and hopefully advanced and pretty sophisticated for the area that you are studying and/or you will be studying at the future university you will be applying to.

這個(gè)表現(xiàn)出眾，一方面是學(xué)術(shù)上的出眾，另一方面還體現(xiàn)在你課外活動(dòng)的表現(xiàn)上。所以學(xué)生在重視在校成績(jī)的基礎(chǔ)上，還要多做課外活動(dòng)，活動(dòng)最好和你要申請(qǐng)的專(zhuān)業(yè)或者現(xiàn)在在做的，轉(zhuǎn)學(xué)也會(huì)繼續(xù)去學(xué)習(xí)的專(zhuān)業(yè)掛鉤，這些活動(dòng)最好可以比較與眾不同，復(fù)雜程度最好也要比你在高中時(shí)期做的活動(dòng)要高一些。

Q5. Hi Sophie，I used to listen to your lecture so I know that if I earn a bachelor degree from an American university, it will be an advantage when applying for a graduate degree in US. However, if my undergraduate university is not a high ranked US university, would it hurt my chance to transfer to a top US university? I guess what I am trying to ask is that, if top US universities have clear restrictions on applicants’ former universities’ rankings. Many thanks! If you are undergraduate university in the US is not very highly ranked, it’s ok, don’t worry, you can still get into a top ranked graduate school. I am actually a perfect example of that. There are no restrictions on the ranking of your undergraduate institution, as long as you have done very academically and stood out at your undergraduate institution, then you should be able to successfully or hopefully apply as a graduate student to a top ranked US institution.

The keys that they are going to look at are that your course work, that you’ve done very well in your classes at your current university, and that you got excellent letters of recommendation, and that you had great experiences outside classroom. So they will be looking for experiences that are aligning with your area of interest and your resume as well.

在申請(qǐng)中學(xué)校會(huì)比較看重的幾點(diǎn)是：你的在校成績(jī)是否出眾，你是否有強(qiáng)有力的推薦信，你在課堂之外的表現(xiàn)又如何，是不是有一些比較不錯(cuò)或者說(shuō)突出的個(gè)人經(jīng)歷。當(dāng)然，你的簡(jiǎn)歷他們也是一定會(huì)看的，他們也會(huì)找尋你是不是有和你要申請(qǐng)的這個(gè)專(zhuān)業(yè)相關(guān)的實(shí)習(xí)或者工作背景。

The biggest thing to remember here is that the lower ranked your university is, the more you need to stand out and do very well on your graduate application.

無(wú)論如何，最重要的一點(diǎn)需要大家知道的是，你本科所在學(xué)校排名越低，你的在校表現(xiàn)就要越突出才可以。

I should add that this would also include standardized testing, so they will wanna see that your GRE or GMAT scores are high enough that they are confident you will be able to do the level of work and the rigor of course work that their top ranked university will have.
