Friends are often considered as family members for every individual all over the world, and even there exists a popular notion in society that a person can be judged by the friends they make. Therefore, choosing what kind of people as friends has been heated discussed in current years. During the assessment, intelligence and a good sense of humor may frequently be taken into consideration. Some people insist that it is more advisable for people to make friends with intelligent people. Comparatively speaking, as far as I am concerned, a sense of humor should be given the first priority.

The first and foremost, making a friend with a humorous person ensures people to spend a period of enjoyment and pleasure. This is due to the fact that a person with a sense of humor first is a person with an optimistic attitude towards life, study, work and the whole word. This kind of people often think of the positive ways even when confronting troubles and disasters, which would bring sunshine to others. In addition, humorous friends are good at making jokes and telling stories. It is undoubted that, when a person is not in a good mood, a humorous friend is definitely helpful to eliminate cloudy mood by jokes. It is predicted that everyone in the world is eager to find a friend like Mr. Bean, a popular and loveable comedian star in Britain.

Another reason to support my view is that humorous people are intelligent as well. This is because a vast spectrum of knowledge and a rich accumulation of life experience are the major sources of a sense of humor. Without those fundamental factors, a person only can be considered funny via exaggerating facial expressions and gestures. This can be proved by the example of a famous stand-up comedian, Joe Wong, who was simply another Chinese immigrant with a doctoral degree from Rice University, Houston, but who was invited to perform at the Radio and Television Correspondents’ annual dinner in 2010. Indeed, as he wrote in his book The Tao of Humor, an Autobiography by Joe Wong, his popular jokes came from the real living conditions in the childhood, experiences of immigration as well as his solid knowledge and science background in biochemistry.

Admittedly, making a friend with intelligent people is also beneficial. It is known that, in our daily life, encounters with various troubles that have gone far beyond our own ability and power to deal with are unavoidable. At those moments, having an intelligent friend by our side is just like receiving charcoal when the snow falls. However, as I mentioned above, a friend with a sense of humor is also full of wisdom, and also is able to give a helping hand when it is necessary. In other words, we have to concede that humorous people must be intelligent, whereas intelligent people might not be humorous. Therefore, having a friend with humor is like having a cake and eating it too.

By way of conclusion, while intelligent people can be helpful, I am still convinced that people can reap more benefits from a friend with a sense of humor. This is because not only can humorous friends bring pleasure for others but also they are smart and wise as well.
