1、fat change（反語(yǔ)）微小的機(jī)會(huì)；極少的可能

A：I think it was Jason who stole my document. 我覺(jué)得是詹森偷了我的文件。

B：Fat chance! 不會(huì)的。

A：He’s the only one who left here late. 他是唯一一個(gè)走得晚的人。

B：I know him. He’ll never do that sort of thing. 我了解他，他決不會(huì)干這種事兒。

2、mark time 原地踏步；停頓

A：Why did we stop? 我們?yōu)槭裁赐Ｏ聛?lái)？

B：No, we didn’t really stop. We just marked time. 不，我們并沒(méi)有真的停下來(lái)。我們只是原地踏步。

A：Marked time? 原地踏步？

B：Yeah, we have to pause until we get approval. 是的。我們不得不暫時(shí)停下待命。

3、have seen better days 有過(guò)好日子

A：Look, Mrs. Thomas is such a beauty in her early eyes. 看，托馬斯夫人年輕時(shí)這么漂亮。

B：But Mr. Thomas is short, skinny and ugly. 可托馬斯先生又矮、又瘦、又丑。

A：Why do you think Mrs. Thomas married him? 你猜他為什么要嫁給他？

B：He’s certainly very poor now, but I think he’s seen better days. 他現(xiàn)在固然很窮，可我想他有過(guò)好日子。

4、a storm in a teacup 風(fēng)波；小事引起的軒然大波；小題大做

A：The husband can’t understand why his wife got angry so easily. 丈夫不明白他妻子為什么那么容易生氣。

B：He’s too careless maybe. 可能他太粗心了。

A：No, it’s not that. Actually it’s a storm in a teacup. I also thought it’s the women who is to blame. 不是，不是因?yàn)檫@個(gè)。實(shí)際上她是小題大做，我也覺(jué)得是他妻子不對(duì)。

B：Anyway the man has to consider his wife’s feelings. 不管怎么說(shuō)男人應(yīng)該考慮作妻子的情緒。

5、the last straw 忍無(wú)可忍

A：That was the last straw! 真是讓人忍無(wú)可忍！

B：Why did you say that? Did your girlfriend do anything wrong? 你為什么這么說(shuō)？你女朋友做什么錯(cuò)事了嗎？

A：She refused to see me. She must have fallen in love with another guy. 她拒絕見(jiàn)我，她一定是愛(ài)上別人了。

B：I don’t believe it. Talk with her, will you? There must be some misunderstanding between you. 我不相信。和她談?wù)�，好嗎？你們之間一定是發(fā)生什么誤會(huì)了。

6、make a clean breast of….懺悔

A：You’re restless. Are you in trouble? 你老是不安？有麻煩嗎？

B：I’ve done something I shouldn't. 我做了件不該做的事。

A：Then make a clean breast of it, you will feel released. 那就徹底懺悔一下吧。你會(huì)感覺(jué)輕松一些的。

B：I’ve not decided yet. 我還沒(méi)決定呢。
