Part 1
Do you like trees?
Sample 1:
Yes, I like trees because whenever I see those green trees, I feel refreshed and comfortable. For example, I would like to look at the trees outside my window to have my eyes relaxed. Trees can beautify the environment, which helps me feel better, and that is why I love to have trees around my house.
Sample 2:
Yeah, I do. And uh, I don’t really think there’s anything not to like about them! You know, they look nice, they add more colour to a place, um… so yeah I think trees are great!
What kind of trees do you like?
I prefer those big trees with plenty of green leaves, such as oak and pine. Ever-green trees are my favorite one because I can enjoy their beauty all the year around. I also like trees which have special sweet smell like camphor, for they are not only beautiful scenery but also bring me good smell.
What kind of trees is popular in your country?
Well, generally speaking, plane tree is the most common kind and people can see them anywhere across the country, because they are suitable for the weather in most areas in China. In the north part of China, there are large white birch forests. And in the south area, it is popular to plant banyan along the streets in cities and countryside.
Part 2
Describe an ambition you have not achieved yet. You should say What the ambition is Why you wanted to achieve the ambition What you did in order to achieve the ambition And explain why you have not achieved the ambition yet. |
I am sorry to say that one of the biggest ambitions I have not achieved was getting accepted into Cambridge University. This was my high school goal. Cambridge University is the top university in the world and when you graduate you are usually guaranteed a very very very good job. Also the alumni get high paying jobs and possibly a good government job.
If I got accepted into Cambridge University, this would have made my parents proud, because actually my father graduated from there and he has a good job. In China parents love to brag about their children and I wanted to give them something to brag about back then.
I did a lot to get accepted. For example, I went to a lot of training centers in order to get a high score on the IELTS exam. I also read a lot of strategic books on how to score high. Unfortunately, I did not score high enough. Since I am from_______, it is a fierce competition to get a score in the IELTS examination. I learned later on that this was only the first step in achieving a good degree. That is why I am taking the IELTS today. So I am sad to say that I did not get accepted into Cambridge University ______ months ago, but that was only the beginning to my path to success.
Part 3
Do you think children should have ambition?
Of course, but they should be able to choose the goal and it should be realistic. For example, when I was young, I had several kinds of ambitions. My first goal was to play the guitar. I wanted to play the guitar, because I saw a video on TV and I wanted to be a star like the person on TV, but it never happened. Then I wanted to learn how to dance and I did it. The last goal was to learn how to swim and I did that. Even though these goals were simple to achieve, they still kept me busy. I also think that if children don’t have some kind of ambitions they will be under achievers. I actually read about this on yahoo. Some scientist in America did a study and discovered that if children set a goal and don’t achieve it, it is actually good for them because it teaches them how to win and lose. I find this strange, but I think it is actually true.
Do parents in your country want their children to have ambitions?
Yeah, for sure. I think most parents are very happy to see their children express ambitions. But I should also add that if the ambition doesn't accord with their own hopes for their child's future, then parents might not be so supportive. For instance, if, let's say, a child's ambition is to be a dancer or artist or something like that, then it's probable that many parents might try to quell such aspirations, as those kinds of careers are very difficult to succeed in, and I mean, no parent wants to see their children struggling through life.
Is ambition important?
Yeah, I'd say it is. You know, it gives you focus, instead of simply just drifting through life aimlessly. But it doesn't necessarily have to be a big ambition. I mean, some people's ambition might just be to raise a family, you know, it doesn't always have to be something grand like becoming the next Steve Jobs. But as long as you have some kind of ambition, that's the important thing.
Are your friends ambitious?
Yeah, I suppose they are in they own way. Um…and if I give you a few examples, one of them wants to start a shop online, um, and another friend….what does she wanna do again?! Oh yeah, she wants to start her own fashion label, which is pretty cool! So I'd say they are pretty ambitious,
Is it always good to be ambitious?
Um… I think as long as it drives you in a positive way, and doesn't cause harm to others, then it is, yeah. So it really kind of depends on what the ambition is. You know, if a person has evil intentions, then being ambitious could have disastrous consequences, as history can attest to.
What should be done to achieve ambition?
In my opinion there are three important things need to be done in order to achieve one’s ambitions. The first thing is to have a date when they will achieve their goal. For example, people learn how to drive a car. People need to plan if it takes 3 months, 6 months or even a year. The second thing is practice. Most goals are physical and you need to practice such as playing sports well. People have to practice I am pretty sure Kobe Bryant practiced a lot before entering the NBA. The last thing I can think of is money. Most goals need money. For example, if I got accepted into Beijing University I would have still needed money in order to graduate. Also even if somebody wants to master a video game, it takes money either to buy the game or to pay for electricity to run their computer. So in conclusion, I would say planning, practice and money are all needed to achieve an ambition.
What are the difficulties in the process of achieving ambition?
As I mentioned before there are three important things to achieving an ambition. Planning, practice and money. Let me go into more detail about these. First, even if you plan there are always some kind of circumstances that effect the time line like a death, holiday, test date, etc. Sometimes people don’t have choice about a date and they get what they get. Practice also might not work. Some people are not good at some things. For example, my friend tried to get her driver’s license and she couldn’t pass the driving test. She practiced, practiced and practiced but she failed the test. The last thing is money. People have to budget their money and not everybody is rich, so some people have to save up for a long time in order to achieve their goal such as going on vacation. My parents have been saving up for a long time to take a trip to America and after 5 years they are going and I know for a fact they wanted to go 5 years ago.
