雅思作文中這些短語你真的用對(duì)了么？

在雅思作文中，一些短語在口語中和在書面語中的用法是不同的哦，一些看似“正確”的短語在寫作中實(shí)際上是“可疑”的。我們來看幾個(gè)例子。

一、雅思作文中的“Based on”

（extremely different in spoken language VS written language）

SPOKEN LANGUAGE: “Based on your behavior last night, I think you are crazy.”
INCORRECT IN WRITEN LANGUAGE (I am based on your behavior—illogical)

IN WRITEN LANGUAGE：“BASE ON” must modify a NOUN
1)Base on xxxxxx, SUB + VERB (BASE ON modifies SUB)
2)SUB + VERB + OBJ, based on xxxxx(BASE ON modifies OBJ)
*I’m going to make slides based on students’ submissions. right
3)  NOUN be based on xxxx

Based on the accounts of ancient observers, historians have pieced together a reasonably accurate picture of the original Greek Olympic Games. X

As a child Frank invested his own secret code, based on rebus-like puzzles and on the substitution of numbers for letters. Right

The use of bright red-colored stop signs and traffic lights is based on the well-known fact that red things attract human attention more quickly than do items of other colors. Right

Based on double meaning, subtle humor, and jokes that only make sense to other members of the culture, British humor is often completely not understandable to immigrants.  Right

總結(jié)：雅思作文中，Based on這個(gè)短語時(shí)再用的時(shí)候一定要有所修飾，且所修飾的必須是名詞或者名詞短語。

二、雅思作文中的“Due to”

this is another modifier that must modify a NOUN. The rule, therefore, is the same as the aforementioned rule for “base on”.

I have to stay up all night due to the presentation that I must finish. X
“Due to the presentation” modifies “night” ---illogical

WAYS TO PROCESS “DUE TO”
1)Use the same rules as for “based on”
2)shortcut: DUE TO = CAUSED BY(you should be able to make this substitution)

The observation deck at the top of the tower was closed due to construction. X
No NOUN next to this! The deck was closed caused by construction X

Due to the six-mile-long traffic jam on the freeway, I was two hours late to the meeting. X
I am due to the jam.  Caused by the jam, I was late.

I was two hours late to the meeting due to the six-mile-long traffic jam, which was due to a brush fire burning on the side of the freeway. X
The first “due to” modifies the “meeting”, wrong. The second modifies “jam”, right

三、雅思作文中Because of vs. Due to

“Due to” modifies a NOUN
From the helicopter, I saw a six-mile traffic jam due to an overturned truck. (due to modifies jam)

“Because of” modifies an ENTIRE CLAUSE
I was late to the meeting because of the traffic.(because of modifies the CLAUSE )

Because the difference--one modifies a NOUN, while the other modifies a clause--it is IMPOSSIBLE to write a sentence in which both “due to” and “because of” could mean the same thing.

總結(jié)：due to 在表原因的時(shí)候，也應(yīng)該修飾名詞，而不能修飾整個(gè)句子（這個(gè)與在口語中不同），而because of是可以修飾句子的。如果不確定是不是可以用due to, 那么可以換乘caused by試一下，如果caused by可以用，那么due to 也可以用。

四、雅思作文中Appositive modifiers（同位語做修飾語）

*set off by commas
*consist of just a NOUN (or a NOUN + MODIFIERS)

SIX CORRECT SENTENCES:
 
I went to the bar with Mr. Smith, a consultant from Fresno.

The plover gets its food by cleaning the mouth of the crocodile, a reptile that could eat the bird at any time.

I went to the bar with Mr. Smith, an outing that was far more fun than saying at work. ( modifies the whole clause)

The plover gets its food by cleaning the mouth of the crocodile, a relationship benefits both animals.

On Sunday our company will hold its annual field day, an outing at which employees drink beers, play softball, and relax.

Today’s math lesson introduces the direct proportion, a relationship in which one variable is a constant multiple of another.

總結(jié)：同位語做修飾語的時(shí)候，要么有一個(gè)名詞來修飾前面的一個(gè)名詞性短語，要么修飾一整句話。
