News about adolescent delinquency is not “new” any more nowadays, and recently a teenager was punished to clean streets because he severely destroyed his school. Whether this sentence is proper is controversial. From my point of view, it is a good choice compared with sending him to prison.

As we know prison is a complicated place where there are various people, especially some real villains. If the teenage criminals were sent there, they would follow the negative models and become corrupted as they are not capable of telling right from wrong yet at that age. Moreover, if they were kept in prison, they would lose the precious opportunities of learning knowledge which is normally necessary and important for one’s career development. If they could not find a job after release in the future to maintain their life, they would probably break the law again and become the dangerous factors of society.

Compared with prison sentence, cleaning streets are more beneficial to other citizens or even the whole society. As we know, the money spent in building prison comes from tax payers, so if prison is not a must for those young people whose crimes are not too serious, it will reduce the burden of tax payers in some extent.
However, it is also understandable that some people worry that the alternative punishments like cleaning streets would be too lenient to have the deterrent effect. But according to the statistics of last year, about 40% of people become repetitive criminals after released from prison, which means prison is not as ideal as expected. When we take this into account, that concern seems to be not very necessary.

All in all, prison is not the only choice, especially if the criminals are still adolescents and their crimes are not very serious. The whole society should give them a chance to correct their misbehaviors and provide them a more appropriate means for their reform. After all they need to be better prepared for coming back to the society.
