During my sophomore year in university, I once had to choose between two courses. One of them was easier for me and the other one was a bit more challenging. The situation was that if I wanted to get the full scholarship for the next semester, I had to maintain my grade point. Hence it was a bit of a risk if I chose the harder one.
I spent a lot of time wondering which course to choose and the deadline of selecting courses was approaching fast. So one afternoon, I sat down, brought out two pieces of paper, and started analyzing the pros and cons of both courses, as well as my strengths and weaknesses. After taking a logical and careful examination of the situation, I came to the conclusion that, despite the risk, the harder course was more worthy of taking, for it was not only something I was more interested in, but also kind of a step stone for my future courses. And if I gave my full effort, I should be fine passing it. So I did choose the harder course. As a result of this decision, I went onto the direction of courses that I always wanted and felt passionate about, and it did turn out to be more useful and suitable for me.
I guess the difficulty of this decision, or every decision for that matter, comes from the fear of the potential consequences. In my case, it was either something easy and something that guaranteed good grades, or something more challenging and risky but much more rewarding. The reason why this decision was difficult to make really comes down to the fear of losing my scholarship.
