Ok then, well I’m not actually that familiar with many family businesses, but one that I do know a bit about is a company which a neighbour of mine set up together with his wife, so that’s what I’d like to talk to you about.

And regarding what their company does, well to put it simply, it manufactures clothes, which they then export to places like Europe and America.

And they seem to be doing pretty well, because a few years ago they were a pretty small operation and didn’t even make the clothes themselves. I mean, to begin with, they were just a trading company, so they would take orders from customers overseas, and then find a suitable supplier here in China to make the order. But after doing this for a while,they became big enough that they started producing everything themselves. And if I’m not mistaken, they’ve now even created their own brand instead of just making clothes for other brands.

So you know, I really admire them for being able to achieve all this, and as for how they’ve been so successful, well Idon’t know for certain, because I’ve never really asked them, but from what I know of them as people, I would say much of their success is down to fact that they’re both incredibly nice. Cos I mean, they treat everyone they meet really well, which I’m sure also includes all their staff and customers. And this is bound to have helped their business grow. Of course there are also other reasons for their success, but this is all I can think of right now.

Other useful phrases:

They know all of their customers by name

They look after their staff really well

They get most of their business from referrals (別人介紹的)

They are willing to take very small orders, which most companies probably wouldn’t bother with.

As far as I know, they’ve never let down a customer, so a lot of their business has come from word-of-mouth

Example :

Well, I would like to give you a short description on a Chinese traditional family business company which is called FuYao limited company. Actually, I have once read this story from a magazine named People Weekly which publishes stories about celebrities or legendary people. Well, the story I read from this magazine is from a person named Cao De Wang who is the founder of FuYao Company. You know, it has become his family business for about more than 25 years until now.

As far as I know, it is a family business which sells glass for auto-mobile enterprises. Additionally, the reason why I want to share this story with you is that the glass for cars that are produced by Fu Yao accounted for 70% of whole shares in the market. More significantly, it has already successfully become the supplier for many famous automobile companies like Bentley, Bens, BMW, Audi as well as Land Rover.

In terms of why this Chinese family business is so successful, I believe the first reason is that Cao De Wang has always insisted on spending amount of money on research and development. Secondly, I feel Confucian culture is really helpful as Cao attributed the success to five Chinese words which are mercy, morality, courtesy, wisdom and courage. And probably more importantly, he is so successful also for the reason that he has a virtuous wife who is always supporting and backing him no matter what happens.

However, I would like to share about my feelings.Well, to be frank, I am convinced that Cao is really a kind-hearted person as he has already donated up to about 5 billion RMB for schools, the poor as well as disaster areas. You know, I am so proud of him who takes great responsibility for the whole society. And I am confident that this family business is the symbol of trueness, kindness and virtue. Therefore, the family business of Cao gave me a deep impression and I was totally touched and inspired. I hope there will be more family business companies like Fu Yao in China.
