Many of us in modern society devote much more time in working life than our parent generation, which means it plays a vital role in our life. However, has it come to a point that it has taken over our life? This is the question that requires a close examination.
No one can deny the importance of work to a person. Our physical and mental energy needs a channeland the effort in a vocation is the best one. Employment not only provides us income and supports us and our families economically, it also helps us establish our self-esteem and pride when we see our job as an opportunity to make a contribution to our community. In other words, we fulfill our social value through a job. More importantly, work can be the creative means of finding and improving ourselves because work is like a mirror reflecting our thoughts and behavior patternsand we can see ourselves in it.
However, the belief that occupational endeavor makes our life meaningful and rewarding does not necessarily lead to the assumption that without a satisfying career, life is meaningless. Life is not only about work. Instead, there are many other factors that influence our well-being. Family life, personal hobbies, religious pursuit, the nurture of friendship and even rest and recreationalso contribute to our happiness. If these aspects are not in balance with working life, there can be little chance to embrace a successful career. Those who overly focus on career tend to agonizeover some problems, such as health issues, fear of failure, disorientation of life, materialismand so forth.
My personal view is that while work is an important part of life, it is not the only thing we have to do in our life. There are other things we can enjoy. The key is the balance between working and personal life which helps us take the most advantage of our mundane life.
