Explosions rocked a hazardous-chemicalsstorage site in the northern Chinese city of Tianjin, killing at least 17people and disrupting operations at one of the world’s busiest ports.

The late-night blasts Wednesday, which mayhave been the result of a fire, spewed toxic material into the air and shattered windows in buildings for kilometers around. China’s earthquake center said the biggest explosion was equivalent to a 2.9-magnitude temblor.

2衛(wèi)報(bào)

英國(guó)《衛(wèi)報(bào)》(The Guardian)以China explosion: Huge blasts in Tianjin kill at least 17 and injure hundreds為題,并在報(bào)道中用devastating blasts來(lái)描述爆炸的場(chǎng)景,同時(shí)強(qiáng)調(diào)在城市的另一頭的房屋都受到震動(dòng),而燃燒物飛起的高度比附近的高樓還要高。

Hundreds of people have been injured and atleast 17 killed after a series of devastating blasts sent a fireball hundredsof metres into the air at an industrial port in northern China.

A shipment of“dangerous goods” in a warehouse went up in flames shortly before midnightlocal time (1600 GMT), state media reported, causing explosions so strong thatthey shook homes on the other side of the city and sent flaming debris archingover nearby high-rise buildings.

Videos posted on social media showed a pillar of flame that dwarfed nearby high-rise buildings, and shook homes several miles away. The blasts ripped offices and homes apart, and sent chunksof masonry flying through the air, pictures showed. One car was crushed by the debris and another was half buried in a crater in the road.

The state-run China Earthquake Networks Center said in an official post on social media that two of the explosions had carried the force of small earthquakes. The first was measured at magnitude of 2.3, the second at 2.9, it said.
