A：Give the skates to me! 把冰鞋給我！

B：You shut up! 你閉嘴！

A：If you don’t know how to skate, why don’t you give the skates to me? Don’t be a dog in the manger. 你若不知道怎么滑冰，干嗎不把冰鞋給我？別占著茅坑不拉屎了！

3、a gay dog 快活的人

A：It’s strange they should get along so well! 他們居然能處得這么好，太奇怪了。

B：That’s nothing unusual. 沒(méi)什么不尋常的。

A：You don’t know much about the couple. One likes to be alone, but the other is a bit of a gay dog. 你不了解這倆口子，一個(gè)喜歡獨(dú)處，另一個(gè)卻喜歡熱鬧。

4、a hard nut 冥頑不化的人；無(wú)知無(wú)覺(jué)的人

A：Bob refused all his classmate’s invitations. 鮑勃拒絕了班上所有人的邀請(qǐng)。

B：I really couldn’t understand him. 他這個(gè)人我真不明白。

A：He’s surely a hard nut, nobody likes approaching him. 他真是個(gè)腦子不開(kāi)竅的人，沒(méi)人愿意靠近他。

B：We’d better also leave him alone. 我們最好也別惹他。

5、a hen-pecked husband 妻管嚴(yán)；怕老婆的男人

A：Aunt is scolding uncle again. 嬸嬸又在罵叔叔了。

B：Don’t worry. Your uncle won’t utter a word back. 別著急，你叔叔不會(huì)還口的。

A：I didn’t know my uncle is a hen-pecked husband. 我還不知道我叔叔是個(gè)妻管嚴(yán)。

B：He isn’t. He thinks it’s not necessary to quarrel with women. 他不是。他覺(jué)得和女人吵架沒(méi)必要。

6、big shot 要人

A：Do you know Mr. Smith? 你認(rèn)識(shí)史密斯先生嗎？

B：No, but I know of him. He’s a big shot in the local politics. 不認(rèn)識(shí)，但我知道這人，他在本地政界是個(gè)舉足輕重的人物。

A：I’m told he’s only a yes-man. 我聽(tīng)說(shuō)他是個(gè)和事佬。

B：Yes, I hate that. At present, what we want is a strong, independent leader, not a bunch of yes-man. 沒(méi)錯(cuò)兒，我就恨這個(gè)。現(xiàn)在，我們要的是強(qiáng)有力的、有主見(jiàn)的領(lǐng)導(dǎo)人，可不是和事佬兒。

8、bosom friends 知心朋友

B：Yes. He is one of my bosom friends. 是，他是我的一個(gè)知心朋友。

9、con artist 大騙子手

A：Is this your first visit to this city? 這是你第一次游覽這個(gè)城市嗎？

B：Yes, why? 是呀，怎么了？
